“Painful Like” is the second video from Austra’s new album Olympia out now on Paper Bag Records. Watch the Exploding Motor Car-directed video here.
Katie Stelmanis of Austra said of the video: ‘‘The main influence was 90’s sci-fi movies like The Ninja Turtles, Super Mario Bros and Garbage Pail Kids where all the visual effects are done by hand and look really gross. We asked Exploding Motor Car to make the video cos they specialize in hand-made effects and puppet-making. ‘Painful Like’ is a song about living life in the sidelines.’”
Austra were influenced by early Chicago house music when dance music was performed with a live band, “Painful Like” too was performed live in the studio free of any programming or loops. While the lyrics may deal with the disillusionment of growing up gay in a small town and finding solace in the arms of a lover, it’s bubbly and buoyant and reflects that Olympiais fundamentally a dance record.
Olympia is available to order here on CD, limited edition double colored vinyl and digitally via iTunes.
