My Dinner with Casey Donovan: a play on celebrity and… porn stars

The Cabaret Company presents My Dinner with Casey Donovan, the newest work by Sky Gilbert (Hackerlove), running at Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace from March 12-22, 2015.

Based on true events Gilbert discovered while researching his upcoming novel “Boy in the Sand,” the play is an homage to a real life fan named Calvin (Michael De Rose) who brings porn star Casey Donovan (Nathaniel Bacon) to dinner… at his parent’s home… where he lives… at 25.

My Dinner with Casey Donovan is a comedic take on a young gay man in the early 1970s, afraid to come out to his parents, who thrusts himself into a situation where he’s forced to face his closeted lifestyle in front of his family. The shining star in this play isn’t the poster boy porn star, but this internal mumble-force, Calvin, who completely captivates audiences with his ability to make you feel insecure and apathetic all at once.

De Rose is the glue that holds this story together, driving it forward at an awkward and emotional pace. While the use of the space is not ideal if you’re sitting anywhere else but the back row, De Rose’s performance doesn’t always need to be seen to be heard… or felt. Despite being set in the ’70s, De Rose’s portrayal of this self-concious and fascinated fan boy crosses decades; with energy to keep you thinking of those days when you went weak in the knees for your own Casey Donovan.

My Dinner with Casey Donovan is on stage until March 22, 2015 at Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace! Get your tickets here.
